*떼굴어지다

어느 날, 민서가 침대에서 놀다가 베개에 밀려서 데굴 한 바퀴 굴렀습니다.

One day, 민서 was rolled over by a pillow while she was playing on the bed.

자지러지게 웃으면서 민서가 하는 말이 ‘떼굴어졌어요’

She said 떼굴어졌어요 while bursting into laughter.

‘떼굴어졌어요’ is not a grammatical expression.

But I tried to guess how she came up with that combination.

‘지다’ has many different meanings but in this case it is used as a verb helper, 보조 동사.

When you add this to an adjective, it adds the meaning of becoming or getting into a certain state , and it makes the adjective(state verb) a verb(action verb).

여름이 되니까 낮이 점점 길어진다.

Since summer is here, the day is getting longer and longer.

길다 long  길어지다

짧다 short 짧아지다

춥다 cold 추워지다

덥다 hot 더워지다

크다 big, tall 커지다

작다 small, shore 작아지다

She knew 데굴데굴 and 지다 from 작아지다

and she had no idea what verb should be used.

Instead, she just combined them together and came up with this funny but clever word, 떼굴어지다.

  3. native speakers sure do learn words easily which we can’t learn until after years of fake situational studying. I had no idea actually 데글데글 was a word until I read this thing. How a baby knows that, really is amazing.

  4. 아이들 책에 보면 ‘데굴데굴’이나 ‘지글보글’ 같은
    의성어, 의태어가 아주 많이 나와요.
어른들이 보는 책에는 그런 표현이 많지 않지만
오히려 아이들이 보는 책에 많기 때문에 아는 거예요.

성인학습자가 성인용 교재만 가지고 공부하다 보면
실제로 저런 단어들은 많이 접하기가 어렵죠.
