Hangeul in fashion

Have you seen these things?

There is a fashion designer who used handwritten Korean on his works.

His name is Lie Sangbong. http://www.liesangbong.com

(I wonder if he did this(write his last name ‘lie’ not ‘lee’) intentionally. Did he know that it will be an English verb ‘to lie’? Just curious.)

You can see more clothes with Hangeul on them.

What was selected to be written on those things are famous poems or novels of Korean writers.

  2. This is really amazing, as I never, and I do mean *never* see a shirt with Korean writing on it. Everything is in English. Sometimes there will be a bag with Korean written on it, but basically Korean fashion is all in English. I can imagine a few possible buyers of those products:
    — a foreigner who is Korean happy that day
    — a Korean 교포 who wants to maintain cultural identity
    — a poet or artist attending cultural functions

Because it’s poetry, I can’t really say even die-hard politicians would be into wearing it, they would probably prefer the Korean soccer world cup soccer jersey.

Many people will get chinese characters done (tattoos, shirts) in America and what-not, but most of the world doesn’t know the Korean writing system and the response would most likely be perplexed questions.

  3. Yes, he did spell his last name “Lie” intentionally. Why? That’s how European spells “Lee”.
